David + Kaylee


I really can't even put into words how exciting it was to get to witness and shoot this surprise proposal! When David first reached out to me to help plan this session I was over the moon to have the opportunity to capture such an intimate moment for two amazing people. He was certain he wanted all of their family there, and to keep it a complete surprise. Since their five year anniversary was coming up, he arranged a couple portrait session so that she knew she would be planning on taking pictures and wouldn't be as suspicious. Quite clever!


The Raven Lodge in Huntsville State Park, just 30 minutes north of Conroe in Huntsville, Texas was the most perfect location because it offered the natural romantic look he was hoping for without being "too much", and it also provided a way to have the rest of the family arrive separately and not be seen! The Lodge overlooks a lake surrounded by trees with a spectacular sunset view, and the Lodge itself blocks visibility to the parking area and road so she never saw her family arrive or hide just around the corner. Also a plus for friends and family who aren't interested in trying to hide in thorny bushes!


When they arrived we started our session at the top of the lodge and worked our way down towards the lake. As they got comfortable dancing at the edge of the lake, I asked her to face the lake and have David stand just behind her, as she gazed out over the water for the moment a friend who was in on the plot handed David the ring over the railing and I told Kaylee to turn around as David came to his knee! It. was. perfect.


She was overwhelmed, almost forgot to say "YES!" and then the cheers from their family came! Kaylee just fell into David when she saw everyone. There were no words, only tears, and the most authentic smiles, and emotions I'd ever seen or felt.. and I've shot weddings for more a decade. We paused and they rejoiced with friends and family. Then continuing the rest of the session, this time as the most gorgeous newly engaged couple in town!
